Quick start
This guide takes you through your first trip with Geo Tracker, from recording to sharing. Each step links to a page with more details.
1. Record a trip
Section titled “1. Record a trip”- Go outside, so your device can see the sky.
- Tap the red record button at the bottom right of the map.
- Allow the permissions Geo Tracker asks for. On Android, allow location access all the time, so recording continues while the screen is off.
Recording starts at once. Until your device finds its position, the status shows No fix. Outdoors, this usually takes a few seconds, but sometimes it can take longer. Indoors, there may be no signal at all, or it can be very inaccurate: the position jumps around, and the track can show distance you never traveled. For an accurate track, don’t record indoors: pause or stop the recording before you go inside.
You can now lock the screen and put the device away. On iPhone, don’t swipe Geo Tracker away from the app switcher, as this stops the recording.
On Android, some phones stop apps in the background to save battery. If your recording stops or has gaps, set up your phone as described in Background recording.

- To finish, tap the smaller stop button next to it.
The trip is saved as you go, so there’s nothing to save at the end.
